Taxonomy: Picus Shorii Vigors, 1832, Himalayas.
Forms a superspecies with D. javanense. Races weakly differentiated. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- shorii (Vigors, 1832) - N India (Haryana) E through lowlands and S foothills of Himalayas to Nagaland and N Bangladesh; possibly still in peninsular hills (Eastern Ghats).
- anguste Ripley, 1950 - W Myanmar.
