Taxonomy: Larus (Gavia) Hartlaubii Bruch, 1853, Cape of Good Hope.
Little known and requiring substantial study. Forms superspecies with L. novaehollandiae and L. scopulinus; often treated as a race of the former, but now usually considered a separate species, closely related also to L. cirrocephalus and L. ridibundus. Monotypic.
Distribution: Coastal SW Africa, mainly from C Namibia (Swakopmund) to SW Cape Province (Dyer I).
