Taxonomy: Aethopyga bella Tweeddale, 1877, Surigao, north Mindanao, Philippines.
Forms a superspecies with A. shelleyi, previously treated as conspecific; it has been suggested that A. duyvenbodei may be part of this superspecies. Race minuta not well differentiated, and validity has been questioned. Six subspecies recognized.
