Taxonomy: Scopus umbretta Gmelin, 1789, Senegal.
Origins and relationships obscure. Some affinities with Ardeidae, Ciconiidae, Balaenicipitidae, Phoenicopteridae and Charadriidae. Birds from Madagascar sometimes considered separate race, bannermani. Two subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • umbretta Gmelin, 1789 - most of tropical Africa, SW Arabia, Madagascar.
  • minor Bates, 1931 - coastal belt from Sierra Leone to E Nigeria.
