Taxonomy: Pteroglossus Culik Wagler, 1827, Cayenne.
Distinct from all others of genus. Although not very closely related to S. spectabilis, both that and present species have sometimes been thought to belong to probable superspecies formed by S.nattereri, S. reinwardtii, S. gouldii and S. maculirostris, but they differ from those four in voice and displays. Monotypic.

Distribution: Extreme SE Venezuela, the Guianas and N Brazil N of Amazon (from lower R Negro E to E Amapá).
