Other common names: Ethiopian Thrush (simensis)
Taxonomy: Merula litsitsirupa A. Smith, 1836, between the Orange River and the Tropic of Capricorn, southern Africa.
Often placed in genus Turdus, but perhaps more closely related to Zoothera. Races stierlingi and pauciguttata considered of doubtful validity. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- simensis ( Rüppell, 1840) - Eritrea and Ethiopia.
- stierlingi ( Reichenow, 1900) - C & E Angola E to Tanzania.
- pauciguttata Clancey, 1956 - S Angola, N Namibia, NW Botswana and W Zimbabwe.
- litsitsirupa ( A. Smith, 1836) - C Namibia and S Zambia S and E to N South Africa, Swaziland and S Mozambique.
