Taxonomy: Pteroglossus sulcatus Swainson, 1820, Venezuela.
Forms a superspecies with A. derbianus. Rather closely related also to A. prasinus, with which race calorhynchus overlaps somewhat. Race calorhynchus sometimes considered a separate species, but resembles other races vocally and intergrades with nominate. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • calorhynchus (Gould, 1874) - NE Colombia (Santa Marta and Perijá Mts) E into W Venezuela (E to SW Lara).
  • sulcatus (Swainson, 1820) - N Venezuela (Falcón E to Miranda).
  • erythrognathus (Gould, 1874) - NE Venezuelan mountains.
