Trumpeters (Psophiidae)

Grey-winged Trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) - HBW 3, p. 106

French: Agami trompette German: Grauflügel-Trompetervogel Spanish: Trompetero Aligrís
Other common names: Common Trumpeter

Taxonomy: Psophia crepitans Linnaeus, 1758, Cayenne.
Forms superspecies with P. leucoptera and P. viridis. Present species sometimes treated as conspecific with P. leucoptera; alternatively, considered to include race P. l. ochroptera, because distribution of ochroptera appears more compatible with that of present species, and plumage pattern intermediate; however, apparent lack of interbreeding in areas of overlap between P. l. ochroptera and P. c. napensis indicates that these two races probably belong to separate species (see page 96). Two subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • napensis P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1873 - SE Colombia through E Ecuador to NE Peru, and extreme NW Brazil (N of R Amazon/Solimões and mostly W of R Negro.
  • crepitans Linnaeus, 1758 - SE Colombia through E & S Venezuela to the Guianas and S to N Brazil (N of R Amazon and E of R Negro).
