Taxonomy: Gallinula oculea Hartlaub, 1855, Rio Butri, Ghana.
Birds from Cameroon eastward sometimes treated as separate race, batesi, but differ too little from other populations to merit subspecific status. Monotypic.
Distribution: Sierra Leone E across N Zaire to W Uganda and SW to coastal Congo. Occurrence in N Central African Republic (Manovo-Gounda-Saint Floris National Park) doubtful.
