Taxonomy: Pomatorhinus Swinhoei David, 1874, western Fujian, China.
Forms a species group, and has commonly been treated as conspecific, with P. erythrogenys, P. mcclellandi, P. gravivox and P. erythrocnemis, all having similar plumage. Geographical variation possibly clinal; race abbreviatus may be based on clinal differences, and species perhaps better treated as monotypic. Two subspecies tentatively recognized.

- swinhoei David, 1874 - E China (S Anhui, E Jiangxi, S Zhejiang, N Fujian).
- abbreviatus Stresemann, 1929 - SE China (NE Guangxi, S Hunan, N Guangdong).
