Taxonomy: Glareola cinerea Fraser, 1843, mouth of River Niger.
Sometimes placed in genus Galachrysia with G. nuchalis and G. lactea. Forms superspecies with G. lactea. Birds from upper R Niger, with more cinnamon on nape and breast, may merit subspecific separation as race colorata. Monotypic.
Distribution: Large rivers and coasts: Mali and Niger to Ghana, Cameroon, W Zaire and NW Angola.
