Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Squatarola. Monotypic.
Distribution: Arctic Russia, from Kanin Peninsula to Chukotskiy Peninsula and Anadyrskaya; Alaska E to Melville Peninsula and Baffin I. Winters on coasts of North and South America, W Europe, Africa, S Asia, Indonesia and Australia.
