Taxonomy: Procelsterna albivitta Bonaparte, 1856, Lord Howe Island.
Temperate and subtropical counterpart of P. cerulea, with which it forms a superspecies; sometimes considered conspecific. Some authors have claimed that races of SE Pacific belong to P. cerulea, but specimen evidence refutes this. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- albivitta Bonaparte, 1856 - Lord Howe I, Norfolk I, Kermadec Is and Tonga.
- skottsbergii Lönnberg, 1921 - Henderson I, and Easter and Sala y Gómez Is.
- imitatrix Mathews, 1912 - San Ambrosio and San Félix (Desaventurados Is), off C Chile.
