Grey-hooded Bush-tanager (Cnemoscopus rubrirostris) - HBW 16, p. 170

French: Tangara capucin German: Graukopf-Buschtangare Spanish: Tangara Capuchigrís
Other common names: Grey-hooded Tanager; Red-bellied Bush-tanager (rubrirostris); Golden-bellied Bush-tanager (chrysogaster)

Taxonomy: Arremon rubrirostris Lafresnaye, 1840, Santa Fé de Bogotá, Colombia.
Genus sometimes considered to belong with New World warbler family (Parulidae), but recent molecular-genetic data support placement in present family. This species has in the past been placed variously in Chlorospingus and in Hemispingus; appears closer to latter in morphology, feeding behaviour and vocalizations, and close relationship supported by molecular-genetic data. S race chrysogaster, which differs from nominate in plumage and size, but is similar to it in behaviour, has been considered a separate species. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • rubrirostris (Lafresnaye, 1840) - S end of Andes in W Venezuela (S Táchira) and generally in Andes of Colombia and NW & E Ecuador.
  • chrysogaster (Taczanowski, 1875) - Andes of NW & E Peru (Piura; Amazonas S to Junín); W Bolivia (near Tokoaque, in La Paz).
