Taxonomy: Smithornis sharpei Alexander, 1903, Mount Ysabel, 4000 ft [1220 m], Bioko.
Considered more closely related to S. capensis than is S. rufolateralis. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- zenkeri Reichenow, 1903 - extreme SE Nigeria, W & S Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea (Mbini), N Gabon, NW Congo and SW Central African Republic.
- sharpei Alexander, 1903 - Bioko (Fernando Póo).
- eurylaemus Neumann, 1923 - E Zaire.
