Taxonomy: Larus modestus Tshudi, 1843, Lurin, south of Lima, Peru.
Most closely related to L. heermanni. Monotypic.
Distribution: Inland deserts (mainly Atacama) of N Chile and probably S Peru; feeding birds and non-breeders range along coast from Ecuador (Manta, virtually on equator) S to SC Chile (Valdivia).
