Ovenbirds (Furnariidae)

Grey-flanked Cinclodes (Cinclodes oustaleti) - HBW 8, p. 254

French: Cinclode d’Oustalet German: Grauflanken-Uferwipper Spanish: Remolinera Chica
Other common names: Oustalet’s Cinclodes

Taxonomy: Cinclodes oustaleti Scott, 1900, Valparaíso, central Chile.
Has been thought to form a superspecies with C. olrogi. Plumage similarities, however, suggest that it may be most closely related to C. patagonicus or to the superspecies formed by C. taczanowskii and C. nigrofumosus. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • oustaleti Scott, 1900 - Chile (Antofagasta S to Aisén) and W Argentina (Mendoza S to W Chubut).
  • baeckstroemii Lönnberg, 1921 - Juan Fernández Is, off C Chile.
  • hornensis Dabbene, 1917 - breeds on Desolación I (S Chile), Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn Archipelago; some migrate N to S Argentina and C Chile.
