Taxonomy: Picus hypopolius Wagler, 1829, Tehuacán and Tecuapán, Puebla, Mexico.
Sometimes combined with other barred congeners in a separate genus Centurus. Possibly closer to M. lewis, M. formicivorus and M. erythrocephalus. Formerly considered conspecific with M. uropygialis. Monotypic.
Distribution: Interior of SW Mexico from N Guerrero and Morelos E to EC Oaxaca.
