Taxonomy: Anthreptes modesta Eyton, 1839, Peninsular Malaysia.
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with A. affinis; the two overlap in range in Borneo, but are segregated by altitude. Present species and nominate race of latter have been treated as conspecific (with race everetti of A. affinis then treated as a separate species). Geographical variation not well marked; caena intergrades with nominate in S Myanmar (Tenasserim) and S Thailand and could perhaps be merged with it.   • caena Deignan, 1956 - extreme S Myanmar (S Tenasserim) and SW Thailand.
  • modesta (Eyton, 1839) - Malay Peninsula and Borneo.
  • concolor Snelleman, 1887 - Sumatra, including Mentawai Is.
