Taxonomy: Vireolanius pulchellus P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1859, Guatemala.
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Vireolaniidae; alternatively, is sometimes placed in a subfamily, Vireolaniinae. Present species has been placed by some authorities in separate genus, Smaragdolanius, along with V. eximius and V. leucotis. Possibly forms a superspecies with V. eximius and often treated as conspecific, being very similar in plumage and vocalizations; no known intergrades between the two where ranges approach each other in E Panama. - ramosi A. R. Phillips, 1991 - SE Mexico (S Veracruz E to NC Chiapas and Quintana Roo, S to E Oaxaca).
- pulchellus P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1859 - SE Mexico (SE Campeche, SW Quintana Roo), Guatemala (except C highlands), Belize and Caribbean slopes of Honduras and N Nicaragua.
- verticalis Ridgway, 1885 - Nicaragua (on Caribbean slopes), Costa Rica and W Panama (E Veraguas).
- viridiceps Ridgway, 1903 - C Panama (E to Panamá province).
