Taxonomy: Picus melanochloros J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Cayenne; error = Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Chrysoptilus with the other “forest flickers” C. atricollis and C. punctigula. May form a superspecies with latter. Partly terrestrial group of S races inhabiting pampas and Chaco woodland sometimes regarded as forming a separate species comprising the taxa melanolaimus, nigroviridis and leucofrenatus, distinct from the more arboreal nominate race and nattereri.
