Taxonomy: Picus melanochloros J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Cayenne; error = Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Chrysoptilus with the other “forest flickers” C. atricollis and C. punctigula. May form a superspecies with latter. Partly terrestrial group of S races inhabiting pampas and Chaco woodland sometimes regarded as forming a separate species comprising the taxa melanolaimus, nigroviridis and leucofrenatus, distinct from the more arboreal nominate race and nattereri. Five subspecies recognized.

- nattereri (Malherbe, 1845) - NE & SC Brazil S to E Bolivia (Santa Cruz).
- melanochloros (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - S & SE Brazil, SE Paraguay, NE Argentina (E Formosa, Misiones) and Uruguay.
- melanolaimus (Malherbe, 1857) - arid upland valleys in C & S Bolivia.
- nigroviridis (C. H. B. Grant, 1911) - S Bolivia, W Paraguay, N & E Argentina (S to Córdoba and Buenos Aires) and W Uruguay.
- leucofrenatus Leybold, 1873 - NW & WC Argentina (S to Neuquén, W Río Negro).
