Taxonomy: Embernagra chloronota Salvin, 1861, Choctum, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.
Relationships of genus not well understood; molecular evidence suggests that it is close to Rhynchospiza, Peucaea and some Ammodramus. Sometimes considered conspecific with A. conirostris, with which virtually sympatric in NC Honduras, but differs significantly in juvenile plumage, size and vocalizations. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- chloronotus (Salvin, 1861) - Caribbean slope of SE Mexico (from Tabasco and N Chiapas E to S Yucatán and Quintana Roo), N & C Guatemala (Petén and Alto Verapaz), Belize and NW Honduras.
- twomeyi Monroe, 1963 - Yoro and Olancho Departments, in NC Honduras.
