Taxonomy: Ardea striata Linnaeus, 1758, Surinam.
Sometimes placed in genus Ardeola. Races virescens and sundevalli often raised to full species; form patens of C Panama intermediate between virescens and striatus, might be result of hybridization. Thirty subspecies commonly recognized.
