Taxonomy: Picus flavinucha Gould, 1834, Himalayas and lower regions of India.
Forms a superspecies with P. mentalis, which is separated altitudinally in small area of range overlap. Much individual variation in plumage tone and markings, with races intergrading, and clinal decrease in size from N to S. Birds from extreme NW of range, on average longer-winged and generally with less yellow tinge to upperparts, have been separated as race kumaonensis, but differences probably insufficient to warrant subspecific status. - flavinucha Gould, 1834 - N & E India (from N Uttar Pradesh, Orissa) E to Myanmar, S China (S Sichuan, Yunnan) and N Vietnam.
- ricketti (Styan, 1898) - Tonkin area of N Vietnam, and E to SE China (Fujian).
- pierrei Oustalet, 1889 - SE Thailand to S Vietnam.
- styani (Ogilvie-Grant, 1899) - Hainan I.
- wrayi (Sharpe, 1888) - Malayan highlands.
- mystacalis (Salvadori, 1879) - N Sumatra.
- korinchi (Chasen, 1940) - SW Sumatra.
