Taxonomy: Branta albifrons Scopoli, 1769, no locality = ? northern Italy.
Forms superspecies with A. erythropus. Validity of race elgasi has been questioned. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • albifrons (Scopoli, 1769) - N Russia and Siberia from Kanin Peninsula to R Kolyma.
  • frontalis Baird, 1858 - E Siberia from R Kolyma eastwards to Arctic Canada.
  • gambeli Hartlaub, 1852 - taiga of NW Canada.
