Taxonomy: Branta albifrons Scopoli, 1769, no locality = ? northern Italy.
Forms superspecies with A. erythropus. Validity of race elgasi has been questioned. Five subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- albifrons (Scopoli, 1769) - N Russia and Siberia from Kanin Peninsula to R Kolyma.
- frontalis Baird, 1858 - E Siberia from R Kolyma eastwards to Arctic Canada.
- gambeli Hartlaub, 1852 - taiga of NW Canada.
- albifrons (Scopoli, 1769) - N Russia and Siberia from Kanin Peninsula to R Kolyma.
- frontalis Baird, 1858 - E Siberia from R Kolyma eastwards to Arctic Canada.
- gambeli Hartlaub, 1852 - taiga of NW Canada.
- elgasi Delacour & Ripley, 1975 - SW Alaska.
- flavirostris Dalgety & Scott, 1948 - W Greenland.
