Sometimes considered to form superspecies with A. pomarina. Monotypic.

Distribution: EC Europe E through Russia to S Ussuriland and Manchuria; isolated populations in N Iran and NC India. Winters from S Europe, NE & E Africa and Middle East through N Pakistan to S & E China and Indochina.
