Other common names: Sooty(!)/Black Owl, Dusky Barn-owl
Taxonomy: Strix tenebricosus Gould, 1845, River Clarence, New South Wales.
Forms superspecies with T. multipunctata, and until 1981 treated as conspecific, but differs in size, plumage and voice; these two have occasionally been separated in genus Megastrix. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- arfaki (Schlegel, 1879) - New Guinea and Yapen I.
- tenebricosa (Gould, 1845) - SE Australia from Eungella National Park (EC Queensland) to Dandenong and Strzelecki Ranges (Victoria).
