Parrotbills (Paradoxornithidae)

Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill (Paradoxornis ruficeps) - HBW 12, p. 319

French: Paradoxornis à tête rousse German: Rotkopf-Papageimeise Spanish: Picoloro Cabecirrufo
Other common names: Rufous-headed/(Greater) Red-headed Parrotbill, Red-headed Crowtit

Taxonomy: Paradoxornis ruficeps Blyth, 1842, Bhutan.
Has sometimes been placed in genus Psittiparus, along with P. gularis (and, by inference, P. margaritae). Examination of museum specimens indicated that differences between races magnirostris and bakeri were very slight, and former race perhaps of dubious validity; further study required. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • ruficeps Blyth, 1842 - NE India (Sikkim, N West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh E to Mishmi Hills), Bhutan and adjacent S China (SE Xizang).
  • bakeri (E. J. O. Hartert, 1900) - SE Arunachal Pradesh, NE Indian states S of R Brahmaputra, and extreme NE Bangladesh, E to N Myanmar and adjacent S China (NW Yunnan), disjunctly also in SE & S Myanmar.
  • magnirostris (Delacour, 1927) - N Laos and N Vietnam (E Tonkin).
