Taxonomy: Tetrao Cupido Linnaeus, 1758, Virginia.
Often considered conspecific with T. pallidicinctus. Hybridizes extensively with T. phasianellus in areas of overlap. Nominate cupido of E USA, from Massachusetts S to Maryland, extinct since 1932. Two extant subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • pinnatus (Brewster, 1885) - mainly from Dakotas S to Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri; formerly from C Alberta and SE Ontario S to Arkansas.
  • attwateri Bendire, 1893 - coastal areas of Texas and (formerly) SW Louisiana.
