Taxonomy: Rallus benghalensis Linnaeus, 1758, Asia.
Races formerly regarded as separate species, but nowadays almost invariably lumped into one, as they differ so little in morphology and behaviour. Two subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • benghalensis (Linnaeus, 1758) - Africa and Madagascar; Pakistan E to NE China, extreme SE Russia (S Ussuriland) and Japan, and S through SE Asia, Greater Sundas and Philippines to Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores).
  • australis (Gould, 1838) - Australia.
