Taxonomy: Ianthocincla pectoralis Gould, 1836, Nepal.
Geographical variation mainly clinal. Proposed race melanotis (E Himalayas E to N Myanmar) considered part of cline, and merged with nominate. Form named as pingi (C Yunnan, in S China) represents presumed hybrid between nominate and robini. Individuals of this species observed in SW Guangxi (S China) have not been assigned to race. Five subspecies recognized.

subfusus Kinnear, 1924 - SE Myanmar (including N Tenasserim) and NW & W Thailand.
robini Delacour, 1927 - extreme E Myanmar, S China (S Yunnan), N & C Laos and N Vietnam (Tonkin, N Annam).
