Other common names: Caribbean/American/Cuban/West Indian Flamingo (ruber); Rosy Flamingo (roseus)
Taxonomy: Phoenicopterus ruber Linnaeus, 1758, Bahamas, ex Catesby.
Race roseus sometimes considered distinct species; occasionally referred to as antiquorum, but this name is obsolete. Some authors place population of Galapagos in separate subspecies, glyphorhynchus (see page 508). P. chilensis has been included in present species. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ruber Linnaeus, 1758 - Caribbean; Galapagos.
- roseus Pallas, 1811 - S Spain and S France E to Kazakhstan; S through N, W and E Africa to South Africa and through Middle East to India and Sri Lanka.
