Taxonomy: Charadrius melanopterus Cretzschmar, 1829, Djedda, Arabia.
Sometimes placed in Hoplopterus or Stephanibyx. Has been proposed to form superspecies with V. lugubris, but not supported by behavioural or morphological data. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- melanopterus (Cretzschmar, 1829) - extreme E Sudan and Ethiopia; SW Kenya to CN Tanzania.
- minor (Zedlitz, 1908) - NE Transvaal to E Cape Province (South Africa); winters on coast, from extreme S Mozambique to E Cape.
