Other common names: Eastern White/European White/Rosy Pelican
Taxonomy: Pelecanus Onocrotalus Linnaeus, 1758, Caspian Sea.
Some African and Asian populations have been classified as P. (o.) roseus (Rosy Pelican), but strong individual variation, and both subdivision and denomination now obsolete (see page 290). Monotypic.
Distribution: Breeds E Europe to W Mongolia, wintering (?) NE Africa and Iraq to N India; also resident in Africa S of Sahara and at single sites in NW India and S Viet Nam.
