Taxonomy: Colymbus Immer Brünnich, 1764, Faeroes.
Hybridization with G. arctica reported. Monotypic.
Distribution: Mainly Nearctic, where breeds between 48° N and Arctic Circle, in places S to c. 40° N, and N to c. 78° N; in N Atlantic also breeds in Greenland, Iceland, Bear I and very occasionally Scotland. Winters mainly along coasts of N Atlantic and NE Pacific, also stopping off in Great Lakes.
