Great Grebe (Podiceps major) - HBW 1, p. 192

German: Magellantaucher
Spanish: Somormujo Macachón
Taxonomy: Colymbus major Boddaert, 1783, Cayenne; error.
Formerly placed in Aechmophorus, but similarity superficial. Probably represents distinct subgenus or perhaps even genus. Race navasi not universally accepted; if valid, name leucopterus may be applicable. Birds from coastal Peru suspected to constitute additional, undescribed race. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- major Boddaert, 1783 - NW Peru; Paraguay and extreme SE Brazil S to Patagonia and C Chile.
- navasi Manghi, 1984 - S Chile.
