Taxonomy: Colymbus cristatus Linnaeus, 1758, Europe; restricted to Sweden.
Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- cristatus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Palearctic; winters in coastal zones, mainly in S of range.
- infuscatus Salvadori, 1884 - scattered populations in E, S & WC Africa.
- australis Gould, 1844 - SW & SE Australia, Tasmania; South I (New Zealand).
