Other common names: Great Argus-pheasant, Argus Pheasant

Taxonomy: Phasianus Argus Linnaeus, 1766, Tartaria Chinensi; error = Sumatra.
Extinct form bipunctatus, possibly from Tioman I off Peninsular Malaysia, has alternatively been considered a race of present species or a distinct species; known only from a portion of a single male primary of uncertain origin (see page 436). Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • argus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Malay Peninsula S from c. 14o N; Sumatra.
  • grayi (Elliot, 1865) - Borneo.
