Gould's Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera) - HBW 1, p. 244

Other common names: White winged/Sooty capped/White throated Petrel; Collared Petrel (brevipes)

Taxonomy: Procellaria leucoptera Gould, 1844, Cabbage Tree Island, Port Stephens, New South Wales.
Forms part of assemblage often referred to as subgenus Cookilaria. May form superspecies with P. longirostris, P. pycrofti and (?) P. hypoleuca. Race brevipes often treated as separate species. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • leucoptera (Gould, 1844) - Cabbage Tree I (New South Wales).
  • caledonica de Naurois, 1978 - New Caledonia.
  • brevipes (Peale, 1848) - Fiji and Cook Is; possibly also Vanuatu, Samoa, Solomon Is.
