Taxonomy: Ardea goliath Cretzschmar, 1827, Bahr el Abiad = White Nile.
Monotypic.
Distribution: Africa S of Sahara, S Iraq and S Iran, with some non breeders along Red Sea; breeding also inferred at scattered sites on Indian Subcontinent from Pakistan to Bangladesh and S into Sri Lanka.
