Taxonomy: Arremon schlegeli Bonaparte, 1850, Santa Marta, Colombia.
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with A. taciturnus, A. flavirostris, A. aurantiirostris and A. abeillei. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • schlegeli Bonaparte, 1850 - Caribbean coast of Colombia (except Guajira Peninsula) and Venezuela, and Venezuelan Andes.
  • fratruelis Wetmore, 1946 - Serranía de Macuira (on Guajira Peninsula), in N Colombia.
  • canidorsum J. T. Zimmer, 1941 - W slope of E Andes in Santander, in N Colombia.
