Taxonomy: Bucco Franklinii Blyth, 1842, Darjeeling.
Related to M. oorti, being quite similar in morphology and voice; the two are possibly connected also to M. faiostricta. Proposed race tonkinensis, from N Vietnam, now considered inseparable from nominate; trangensis from peninsular Thailand (known from only five specimens) and minor from Peninsular Malaysia, both regarded as indistinguishable from ramsayi. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • franklinii (Blyth, 1842) - WC Nepal and SE Tibet E along Himalayan slopes to N Myanmar, and S China (W & S Yunnan, SW Guangxi), S to Bangladesh (no recent records), N Thailand, N Laos and N Vietnam.
  • ramsayi (Walden, 1875) - C Myanmar and NW Thailand S through Malay Peninsula.
  • auricularis (Robinson & Kloss, 1919) - E Laos and S Vietnam.
