Tanagers (Thraupidae)

Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus) - HBW 16, p. 220

French: Calliste doré German: Goldtangare Spanish: Tangara Dorada
Other common names: Perija Tanager (“aurulenta group”); Sclater’s Tanager (sclateri); Beautiful Tanager (“pulchra group”)

Taxonomy: Tangara Arthus Lesson, 1832, Caracas, Venezuela.
Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also T. johannae, T. schrankii, T. florida, T. icterocephala, T. xanthocephala, T. chrysotis and T. parzudakii. Races possibly represent more than one species, e.g. it has been suggested that nominate race may merit isolated treatment, being markedly different from all others. Other plumage groups include: sclateri; aurulenta, occidentalis, goodsoni and palmitae; and pulchra, aequatorialis and sophiae. Fur.. View all taxonomy...
