Taxonomy: Tanagra cayennensis J. F. Gmelin, 1789, Cayenne, French Guiana.
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a superspecies with E. rufiventris and E. pectoralis. Monotypic.
Distribution: SE Venezuela (E Bolívar), the Guianas, and NE Brazil from Manaus E (on both sides of R Amazon) to Pará and N Maranhão.
