Taxonomy: Melanerpes chrysauchen Salvin, 1870, Chiriquí, Panama.
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Tripsurus, along with M. pucherani, M. cruentatus and M. flavifrons. Forms a superspecies with first of those, or both sometimes included in the superspecies represented by last two. Distinctive race pulcher geographically isolated, sometimes treated as separate species. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • chrysauchen Salvin, 1870 - SW Costa Rica to W Panama.
  • pulcher P. L. Sclater, 1870 - NC Colombia (Magdalena Valley).
