Woodpeckers (Picidae)

Golden-green Woodpecker (Piculus chrysochloros) - HBW 7, p. 506

French: Pic vert-doré German: Bronzespecht Spanish: Carpintero Verdiamarillo

Taxonomy: Picus chrysochloros Vieillot, 1818, Paraguay and Brazil.
Forms a superspecies with P. aurulentus. Specific name sometimes misspelt as chrysochlorus. Racial differentiation partly obscured by considerable individual variation; birds in S Colombia (Putumayo) and NE Ecuador lacking red malar stripe may possibly represent a new, as yet unnamed race; further study needed, possibly also taxonomic revision. Nine subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • aurosus (Nelson, 1912) - E Panama.
  • xanthochlorus (P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1875) - N Colombia and NW Venezuela.
