Taxonomy: Phyllornis aurifrons Temminck, 1829, Cachar, Assam, north-east India.
Forms a superspecies with C. media and was for long considered conspecific, but differs in several respects, including in development of mask. Six subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • aurifrons (Temminck, 1829) - NE Indian Subcontinent (E in Himalayan foothills from Himachal Pradesh, S to Orissa) and N, W & C Myanmar.
  • frontalis (Pelzeln, 1856) - W & E India (S from S Gujarat and the Satpura Range and, in E, from C Orissa).
  • insularis Whistler & Kinnear, 1932 - far SW India and Sri Lanka.
