Taxonomy: Dendropicus [sic] xantholophus Hargitt, 1883, Gabon.
Often placed in a separate genus Thripias along with D. namaquus and D. pyrrhogaster. Forms a superspecies with latter. Monotypic.
Distribution: SW Cameroon E to S Sudan, W & C Uganda and extreme W Kenya, and S to NW Angola and SW & SC Zaire; unconfirmed sight records from Nigeria thought to be unreliable.
