Taxonomy: Ampelis aureo-pectus Lafresnaye, 1843, “Bogotá”, Colombia.
Closely related to P. jucunda, P. lubomirskii and P. pulchra, and all sometimes treated as conspecific, but plumages distinct; geographical range overlap, but without intergradation, between present species and P. jucunda in SW Colombia (Nariño). Populations in S part of W Andes included in nominate, but possibly represent a separate, undescribed race. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • decora Bangs, 1899 - Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in N Colombia.
  • aureopectus (Lafresnaye, 1843) - Andes of N & W Colombia and Venezuela (E to Lara), and Sierra de Perijá (on Colombia-Venezuela border).
  • festiva (Todd, 1912) - coastal range in N Venezuela (Carabobo E to Aragua).
