Taxonomy: Emberiza flaviventris Stephens, 1815, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
Forms a superspecies with E. poliopleura. Geographical limits between some races disputed; proposed races kalaharica (described from Tsotsoronga Pan, in NE Botswana) and carychroa (Langata Forest, in SC Kenya) here included within nominate. Designated type locality of species may well be in error, as there is no evidence that the species ever occurred this far W. Three subspecies currently recognized.

- flavigaster Cretzschmar, 1828 - Sahel from Mauritania E to N Ethiopia and Eritrea.
- flaviventris Stephens, 1815 - S Sudan S through SC & E Africa to Botswana and South Africa.
- princeps Clancey & Winterbottom, 1960 - S Angola and Namibia.
